Why does my hair get thinner with allergies

Category: Allergies

Why is my black lab shedding when we leave him alone?

We adopted a lab from an animal shelter about a month ago. From what we were told he had been there about a month before we got him. When we met with him we noticed that he was losing hair but did not think much of it because we assumed it was his time to shed and since he had been caged for so long.

As soon as we got him home we gave him a bath and brushed out TONS of hair. For about the first 4 days or so I was vacuuming and sweeping up after him and each time gathering a very large amount of hair. It finally seemed to slow down to where now I only have to sweep and vacuum once or twice a week.

However, we live in an apartment and crate him ONLY when we leave. By the time we get back there is a huge puddle of drool around his cage and lots and lots of hair, clumps even. For a while I thought he was losing his hair all over but now I am starting to notice his hair thinning on his stomach area. We were gone about 4 hours the other day, the longest he's even been crated, and when we got home his stomach appears near bald now.

I'm wondering if this is a result of stress or allergies or what? Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas other than taking to to the vet? I've never seen him lick down there and he doesn't really scratch anywhere all that often, nor have I seen any fleas on him. He does have a cute, sometimes annoyingly loud habit of washing his feet before he goes to bed with us, but that's it for the licking.

Black labs shed all the time. You wouldn't think it because their coat is short, but you will have to vacuum more for a lab than practically any other dog. You're lucky that you only have to do it once or twice a week.

Does ringworm clear up on its own in rats?

I noticed a patch of thinned hair on my rat about three weeks ago. It seems to be thickening out now, but about a week ago I started getting red patches on my body.

I went to the dermatologist who diagnosed it a fungal infection, but didn't specify which. I assume it's ringworm, which is why I went it. She prescribed me a topical cream for the rashes.

If his hair seems to be growing back, how important is it that I take him to the vet? I called and they said he'd need to be treated with several sulfur-lime dips over the next six weeks if he has ringworm.

I have to dip him, my roommate as a sulfur allergy, and like I said, the hair seems to be growing back. Right now, I'm really concerned for my OWN sake because he doesn't seem at all bothered. I, on the other hand, have seven quarter sized rashes over various parts of my body, most of which itch enough to make me cry. But I don't want to ignore his medical needs. Nor do I want to subject him to any unnecessary torture.

Now what?

Ringworm doesn't go away on it's own.

BUT!!

I'd wait to see if he breaks out again before starting treatment. It's always possible you picked it up somewhere else.
(Stray cats, ANY contact with the ground. Clothes left on the grass, etc.)

***NOTE***
You can give the rat ringworm.
Limit contact. Even if he doesn't touch the red spots, the "spores" are everywhere and super contagious.

Sorry for your trouble.
Feel better soon!

Alcohol, strattera caused rapid hairloss?

Hi there. I started drinking at age 18. I drank quite a bit (prolly got drunk-drunk at least twice a week with my friends.) within I'd say 3 months I started to notice my once very full head of hair was thinning, and my hairline receding. 3 months after that my hair was so thin I had to wear hats no matter what. It was shocking. People I hadn't seen since I had started drinking couldn't believe it. I went to my dermo and after about 30 seconds with me and 500 dollars for the consultation she told me it was male pattern baldness and prescribed propecia and suggested rogaine. Since taking them (it's been about a year and a half) my hair loss seems to have slowed down, although it continues... as does my drinking, although I don't drink-to-drunk anymore, and I don't drink as often. The thing about it that is strange is that it doesn't really seem to follow the MPB pattern, in that, yes my hairline is receding and the spot on the top of my head is thinning more than the rest, but MY ENTIRE scalp is thinning. I'm pretty sure that's significant. My dermo didn't really seem to be paying attention to me so I'm asking you guys.

My question is does anyone know of an allergy or something rare, a condition or some cases that link alcohol to rapid hair loss? I mean, I started drinking and started noticing hair in the drain, and in 5-6 months went from looking 18 to 45.
I also mentioned strattera in the title because I started taking that for about 6 months after starting drinking, but stopped after those six months. This is the period when I lost the greatest amount of hair. I speculate that if DHT didn't cause m hair loss in the first place perhaps that would explain why even after I stopped drinking so much and stopped taking strattera my hair hasn't returned, but it seems like the rogaine would have helped by now... Anyway, any leads or suggestions are appreciated (No Ads, please). thank you for reading.

Yes, alcohol can contribute to hair loss. It lowers zinc levels.Zinc keeps the hair healthy. You might want to consider taking a zinc supplement before you drink, or stop drinking completely and supplementing with zinc.

i just wonder why wont it grow whats wrong ?
any specific food? thanks so sorry for the long post

Ask your vet about Natural Choice by Nutro. My dog has been eating it since I got her 2 years ago and I have never had any problems like you describe. Also, flea treatments, shampoos etc., while they are neccesary can also be very harsh. Check out shampoos and conditioners that have oatmeal in them or are hypo-allergenic. Petco or Petsmart has quite a good assortment of these. Also, consult a dog groomer and get an opinion on some good shampoos and conditioners. I love your dog's pictures and I think he is beautiful. Keep me posted. He'll be in my prayers.

What to do about a neglected dog in my care?

I have been talking to a lady for a few months about paying her to use her dog as a stud for my great dane female. The time came for my dog to come in heat and the lady started to get weird about the dog and finally said if I would keep him at my home for a few weeks since she was moving then I could use the dog for stud and pay her when the pregnancy was confirmed. Pictures of the dog looked great and then when she dropped him off he looked ok but I hadn't really examined him until later. She told me he had an allergy which was why he had some red spots on his skin. Once she left and I started looking at him closely I noticed that he is pretty thin, ribs, hips, and spine showing. The red spots were actually bloody and aggravated like maybe flies had been on him and he had scratched the hair off. His ears are crusty and cut up from him scratching them. Lots of gunk in them. He has some puckered up scars that look like pretty bad cuts on his legs and feet. One is still open and it looks like he may have needed stitches. His toenails are split. His chin has a big hard spot on the bottom. I have been putting cream on the cuts and rash and they are getting better and he looks to have gained a little weight since I've been giving him good food. He has been with me since Saturday and they have not checked on him at all. I'm wondering if they just dumped this dog on me...he is a super sweet and beautiful dog he is just run down. What should I do? I want badly to take him to the vet but my money is so tight right now and I'm going to owe her the $500 in a month plus she sent no food with him and a great dane goes through a lot of food! What will the vet do if he considers the dog abused? If I take him to the vet is there any way that she can be made to pay the vet bill? Thanks!!

I would take him to the SPCA and they will do a full investigation on the dogs well being. I found a dog once who had a microchip, but the collar was grown into the skin and the dog had a really bad infection because of it. I took it to the SPCA and they did an investigation on the owner and found the owner not even fit enough to have a goldfish. They treated the dog and got it's proper veterinarian care and then was adopted out to a rich family who had all healthy animals. This would be the best course of action. The SPCA is what you call "animal cops". I volunteered for them once, you wouldn't believe how many people abuse their animals.

Do you have or Know anyone with Celiac Disease?

Do you know anyone with celiac disease? What were their symptoms? What kind of treatment did they get?

Lately I have been looking for explanation on why I have lost so much weight.. I've been to the doctors to get my thyroid check and everything turned out to be fine. The doctors did say I was anemic, but they never really looked into it. They just said that since my father has sickle cells thats PROBABLY what its from. I'm not too secure with that answer... Last time I went to the doctors was probably in December and I weigh 136... I weighed myself on a scale at my job the other day and it said 129... I'm 5'8... this is really starting to scare me....

I also noticed that everytime I eat pizza and other certain foods I get really awful stomach cramps and have diarrhea... I thought it may be lactose intolerance but when I drink milk or eat regular cheese...I am perfectly fine.... When I googled the pizza thing... I found information on yeast allergies and gluten allergies... Could this be the cause? I do plan on making a doctors appointment soon... im just trying to weigh my options... Im getting really upset because I dont like looking really skinny and feeling like im wasting away...

My hair doesn't grow any mor... its really thin... im guessing due to the inability to absorb nutrition... I just want to know exactly what Celiac Disease is and if anyone with it has experienced any of my symptoms?

Hi, I have celiac. My symptoms were migraines, restless legs, polycystic breast pain, weight loss, lactose intolerance (lactase is produced at the tips of the villi, I had no villi tips, ergo no lactase=lactose intolerance), Some gut pain when drinking beer, unexplained hair loss.
The thing with celiac is that people can have "official" symptoms, unofficial symptoms like I had (RLS and pc breasts 90% resolved with a gluten free diet, which is the "treatment" by the way), or absolutely no symptoms! Since you have gut issues or even suspect lactose intolerance and anemia, that should be enough for you to ask for a celiac blood panel screening test. Your doctor may or may not know what to order, especially if you are in the US. US doctors were trained to believe that celiac is rare (which it is not) and limited to a few ethnic groups (which it is not) so go here, print this up and bring it to your next appt so they know what to order:
http://www.labtestsonline.org/understand…

Testing for sickle cell is incredibly easy and should have been done already. If you just have the trait, then you should not be anemic.
Get tested for sickle cell and celiac asap, please. Celiac testing is a simple blood test to start out with, as is sickle cell testing.
The "treatment" for celiac disease is simply following a gluten free diet. Of all the autoimmune diseases to have, this is the one you want as it is controlled by diet alone and nothing else. I'd rather have this than lupus or diabetes which are also autoimmune diseases like celiac. Good luck and I hope you get your diagnosis soon!

My mom also has celiac disease and she just rapidly lost weight. They had to do many blood tests to figure out that that was what she had.She didn't have any other symptoms but it sounds like yours could be signs of them. My best advice would be to go to the doctor and have them do the tests needed to diagnose it. Also for now, try to stay away from breads or cakes and things such as that and see if your condition improves. That's another sign that you might have celiac disease. Once you figure it out however, you must go on a gluten free diet and it is very hard because you can't go out to eat near as much because many times they use wheat flour for just about everything. It is also hereditary so if any of your relatives had it there is a god chance you could have it. Good luck:)

Celiac Symptoms
By Mayo Clinic staff

There are no typical signs and symptoms of celiac disease. Most people with the disease have general complaints, such as:

Intermittent diarrhea
Abdominal pain
Bloating
Sometimes people with celiac disease may have no gastrointestinal symptoms at all. Celiac disease symptoms can also mimic those of other conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastric ulcers, Crohn's disease, parasite infections, anemia, skin disorders or a nervous condition.

Celiac disease may also present itself in less obvious ways, including:

Irritability or depression
Anemia
Stomach upset
Joint pain
Muscle cramps
Skin rash
Mouth sores
Dental and bone disorders (such as osteoporosis)
Tingling in the legs and feet (neuropathy)
Some indications of malabsorption that may result from celiac disease include:

Weight loss
Diarrhea
Abdominal cramps, gas and bloating
General weakness and fatigue
Foul-smelling or grayish stools that may be fatty or oily
Stunted growth (in children)
Osteoporosis
Anemia
Another gluten-related condition
Dermatitis herpetiformis is an itchy, blistering skin disease that also stems from gluten intolerance. The rash usually occurs on the elbows, knees and buttocks. Dermatitis herpetiformis can cause significant intestinal damage identical to that of celiac disease. However, it may not produce noticeable digestive symptoms. This disease is treated with a gluten-free diet, in addition to medication to control the rash.

When to see a doctor
If you notice or experience any of the signs or symptoms common to celiac disease, see your doctor. If someone in your family is known to have celiac disease, you may need to be tested.

Seek medical attention for a child who is pale, irritable, fails to grow, and who has a potbelly, flat buttocks and malodorous, bulky stools. Other conditions can cause these same signs and symptoms, so it's important to talk to your doctor before trying a gluten-free diet.
