Diflucan and nystatin?
Questions and Answers
My baby has thrush in his mouth the doctor done gave him nystatin, diflucan and gentian violet ?
it go away for a while and it come right back I don't know what to do I keep his bottles sterilize and I've taken him to the dr several times I don't know what to do next.
My doctor laughed at me when I told him I melted all the bottles sterilizing them. Lucky I didn't burn down the house. He said it didn't need to be done.
I copied this from elsewhere:
Treating oral thrush in infants and nursing mothers
If you're breast-feeding an infant who has oral thrush, you and your baby will do best if you're both treated. Otherwise, you're likely to pass the infection back and forth. Your doctor may prescribe a mild antifungal medication for your baby and an antifungal cream for your breasts. If your baby uses a pacifier or feeds from a bottle, wash and rinse nipples and pacifiers in a mixture of equal parts of white vinegar and water every day until the thrush clears up.
Can i take diflucan with nystatin thrush of the mouth?

We have thrush. Taking Diflucan/ Nystatin/ Acidophilus. Terrible itching. Ladies, help?
My first concern is the safety of Diflucan while breastfeeding. Has anyone taken it and had any complications? There are mixed results about whether or not it is safe during breastfeeding.
What can I use for the itching? I have nipple cream that the doctor gave me but OH... My... GOD this is unbearable!!
Any advice is GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Hi :( I'm so sorry about your discomfort. I just got over really really bad thrush- it was green and lasted for 2 months (!) I had to go on meds also. (I'm pregnant.) It was burning and itching so bad that I was in tears some nights, not able to sleep and so uncomfortable. The medication cleared it up really really fast for me, but in the meantime that cream that comes with the over the counter yeast infection kits (Monistat, Canesten) really helped for temporary relief for me. You can buy big tubes of it on its own next to the Monistat at the pharmacy.
Also something that helped that my doctor put me on to: sitting in a tub with the shower head on a gentle setting, and bathing the affected area in warm water, gradually getting hotter and hotter (test on your hand first!) until it's as hot as you can handle. Let it run on the area for as long as you can handle. This is great for the itching and for me anyway, relieves it enough to say, go to sleep.
This goes without saying, but bathe regularly (I had to twice a day) with a mild unscented soap like Ivory and change your underwear often. (I had to twice a day.) If I didn't do this the itching and burning and pain would be unbearable.
I'm really sorry you are going through this, it's torture! Hoping you feel better soon :)
Also: try the Monistat cream but ask a pharmacist what to do about itching, those guys are wizards sometimes, they know more than the doctors about this stuff often...
What is Your Experience with Diflucan in treating a candida infection?
I was on antiobiotics for over a year to treat acne. After completing this, I developed oral thrush due to probable overuse of the antibiotics. My doc put me on nystatin which worked for a while but i recently had a flareup and some intestinal issues, which makes us think I might have a systemic candida infection. He has once again proscribed nystatin and now diflucan. Have people had success with this?
Diflucan will work to help with symptoms if you have an overgrowth of candida in your digestive system but the only real way to try to get rid of it is through proper diet. Not eating foods that the yeast thrives on is the most important thing to do to restore the balance. Get yourself a supplement like Candida Cleanse at your local health food store.
How long does it take for diflucan to work in an infant that has thrush?
My friends 2 1/2 m/o son has had thrush for 6 weeks. She has done both a round of gentian violet, and nystatin oral liquid, but nothing has worked. He took the diflucan about 5 days ago. Should a difference be noticed by now? Is mouth is raw, but still he has thrush. Everything has been boiled after each use. Why does he still have it?
My son used to get thrush ALL the time due to reflux......When he was given Diflucan, it usually started working within 24 hours........Usually completely gone in a couple of days.
I would call the doctor again. Something is going on there.
Is it okay to give diflucan to a newborn who has thrush?
My 4 week old has been taking nystatin for the past week and a half for thrush but its not going away. Her doctor has now given us a prescription for diflucan. Ive only heard of adults taking it for vaginal yeast infections but not a child, much less a newborn. Then one of the other doctors in the same doctors office said he doesn't prescribe it to his patients so it makes me wonder....is it okay for me to give it to her????
My daughter just got off of fluconazole and it was a life saver...When she was on nystatin it just made her thrush worse and it started to hurt her and she stopped eating the first night i was told to give her 1ml and by the next morning the white bumps were almost gone...My daughter was fine it did make her go to the bathroom more but at least she was her happy smiley self again!!
Has your baby been on Diflucan for thrush? Did they have a very upset stomach?
My poor 10 week old daughter has been having diarrhea, and is so uncomfortable. This is miserable! Nystatin didn't work. Has anything else worked to cure this in your baby? Thanks so much!
you could try gentin violet. I havent used it but my friend did with her two daughters and she said it worked great. The only thing is that it will stain their mouth and anything it touches purple
Breast yeast infection... I'm now taking Diflucan, but I only got 1 pill?
I got 150 diflucan but to my kowledge I thought with a yeast infection on the breast I thought you take more. Has anyone had to take it and if so for how long & did it work? They also told me to pump and dump, but why if Diflucan is given to babies for yeast?
Nystatin just made mine worse it didn't get rid of my baby's thrush either. I've been pumping and bottle feeding so his thrush is mild.
"Fluconazole does appear in the milk, and this is as it should be, since the idea is to treat infection in the ducts and nipples. It is thus superior to ketoconazole, which gets into the milk in only tiny amounts. The baby will obviously get some, but this drug is now being promoted for use in babies for the treatment of simple thrush. There have been no complications in the baby reported from exposure to fluconazole in the breastmilk. Continue breastfeeding while taking fluconazole, even if you are told that you should stop."
kellymom.com touts itself as an 'evidence-based site,' and Dr Jack Newman is my breastfeeding guru. I'd listen to that over some doctor whose breastfeeding education was, well, non-existent.
