Does anyone know if Premarin is safe to take LONG TERM? I used to be on Premarin for 7-8 yrs?

Then the Dr took me off it. That was approx 5 yrs ago. Now my hot flashes are coming back. I looked it up on the internet and can't find if the 'powers that be' have changed their minds agian or not. I will be 50 next month and have had a hysterectomy becuase of cancerous cells. The Dr is closed for the weekend.

Thanks for your help in advance.

You can always call your local pharmacy and ask the pharmacist about it... I know CVS Pharmacists are very helpful and would do their best to give you the most accurate information that they have. I wouldnt rely on an answer on here, I would much rather have a professional opinion from someone who really knows what they are talking about, pharmacist have went throught alot of extensive schooling to do what they do. I would definatly call them to check on that. Pharmacist can look up any information on any drug that they have, if there have been any long term effects of taking the medication they may be able to find that or direct you to who could such as the drug company, or find studies that have been conducted Good Luck!

also the web site has some information, but i would still call your pharmacy, you dont even have to go to a certain pharmacy to call them

Important Safety Information
What is the most important information you should know about PREMARIN (estrogens), PREMPRO (a combination of estrogens and a progestin), or PREMARIN Vaginal Cream (a cream of estrogens)?

Estrogens increase the chances of getting cancer of the uterus.

Report any unusual vaginal bleeding right away while you are using these products. Vaginal bleeding after menopause may be a warning sign of cancer of the uterus (womb). Your health care provider should check any unusual vaginal bleeding to find out the cause.

Do not use estrogens with or without progestins to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, or dementia.

Using estrogens with or without progestins may increase your chances of getting heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, and blood clots. Using estrogens, with or without progestins, may increase your risk of dementia, based on a study of women age 65 years or older. You and your health care provider should talk regularly about whether you still need treatment with estrogens.
In a clinical trial, the most commonly reported (≥5%) side effects that occurred more frequently with PREMPRO 0.45 mg/1.5 mg and PREMPRO 0.625 mg/2.5 mg than with placebo were breast pain/enlargement, vaginitis due to yeast or other causes, leg cramps, vaginal spotting/bleeding, and painful menstruation. In a clinical trial, there was no difference in the commonly reported (≥5%) side effects for women taking PREMPRO 0.3 mg/1.5 mg compared to those taking placebo.

The most commonly reported side effects of PREMARIN Vaginal Cream include vaginal discomfort or pain, breast pain, vaginitis, and itching.

PREMARIN, PREMPRO, and PREMARIN Vaginal Cream should not be used if you have unusual vaginal bleeding, have or had cancer of the breast or uterus, had a stroke or heart attack in the past year, have or had blood clots, have liver problems, are allergic to any of the ingredients in PREMARIN, PREMPRO, or PREMARIN Vaginal Cream, or think you may be pregnant. In general, the addition of a progestin is recommended for women with a uterus to reduce the chance of getting cancer of the uterus.

What could happen if you take Premarin for longer than 5 years?

My girlfriend went to the ob/gyn today and the Dr was very upset that she's been on Premarin for over 8 years now (prescribed by her primary care doctor for hot flashes.) She's scheduled her for a sonogram to check her uterus to make sure it's ok.
What can happen if you're on this medication for longer than 5 years?

nothing much other than increased risk to develop cancer of the breasts, and the hot flushes will come back when she stops premarin as it has only postponed the symptoms of menopause.

Can premarin cause protein in the urine?

i took premarin for 3 months am now off the med i now have protein in the urine, heart papulations, sweeling in hands, sore shins and feet, diarheia, losing weight,are these symtoms from the premarin, will they go away??? its been 8 wks since been off the med

Is it possible to be preganant if pregnancy test is negative after 10 days of missed period?

My periods are following usually 28 days cycle. My ovulation usually occures on 11 or 12 day. For my last period on sep 5 06 i had taken 1/2 tablet of chlomid for 5 days, i had been given injection further to boost the ovary and then had premarin for 5 days ( 1mg twice a day ). Had duphaston for last 5 days twice daily, still pregnancy test is negative. Is it poosible that i ovulated on 8 or 9 th day of the last cycle.

If you have a 28 day cycle and you were due on the 5th, this would make you 5 weeks pregnant today if you are pregnant.

Home pregnancyy test look usually for a level of the pregnanc hormone HcG of about 20 to 50 mIU/ml or IU/L. At 5 weeks you could be still below the levels of HcG the tests are looking for.
It isn't till week 6, next week, that the home pregnancy test should be 100% accurate for most pregnancy. by then the usual levels of HcG's in a pregnancy woman are anywhere between 1,080 to 56,500mIU/ml or IU/L which is way above what these test look for.

It is possible that you ovulated on the 8th or 9th day. Only an ovulation kit back then could have told you when you ovulated.

Test again next week or ask for a blood test. A blood test would be accurate at 5 weeks.

I have attached a link showing levels of Hcg's in most pregnancy.

Good luck!

Why would an ob/gyn lie and tell you that you need a "simple sonogram" when it's not what she planned to do?

I go with my girlfriend to all of her Dr appts and vice versa, we are always there to support each other. I went with her to her ob/gyn and the Dr told her (and I was sitting right there, taking notes,) that she needed to schedule a simple sonogram because she had been on Premarin for 8 years and that there could be a problem. Neither one of us thought to ask her to elaborate on this test because we both had them before and knew it was just the jelly on your pelvic area and the clinician uses the instrument to go over your stomach...no biggie.
I didn't go w/her for this because I had to work, and we didn't think anything could go wrong....Boy were we mistaken!!!!!
When she got there they told her to undress, and she questioned them as to why. The nurse asked her if she knew the procedure that she was having and she said , yes the dr said it was a simple sonogram....well it turned out to be a hysterosonography....a very painful, and invasive procedure..why would the Dr lie to her?

Sounds like she has an 'old school' thinking dr. As in dr. knows best.
There are medical boards in place in each state where problems like this can be reported.

You can also write a follow up letter to that dr.'s office or even a letter to the editor.
At the very least you can talk to a lawyer about lack of pain management she experienced.
A letter to her insurance co. would also be helpful.
Dilating the cervix without pain control is borderline cruel and unusual!!
Even someone with high pain tolerance would suffer.
She's really much better off with another dr. but I strongly advise you to report this.. to everyone you can think of.

How to calculate drug dosages?

Its been a while since i had this type of math i can remember some of it though but im getting hung up on the formula....example:
Available strenght = available amount
Ordered strenght = amount to give

order = Premarin 1.25mg pd qd
supply = Premarin 0.625mg caplets

0.625 = 0.625
1.25 = x

cross multiply

0.625x = 0.78125

divide

but my question do you divide the 0.625x by 0.78125 which is x=0.8
or
0.78125 by 0.625x which is x=1.25

which one is correct ????

Neither is correct.

Setup
(0.625mg / 1 cap) = (1.25mg / x cap)

Cross multiply
0.625mg * x cap = 1 cap * 1.25mg

Solve for x
x cap = (1 cap * 1.25mg) / 0.625mg
x = 2 caps

Your setup should have been:
0.625mg = 1 cap
1.25mg = x cap

When doing calculations, ALWAYS include the units. After canceling where appropriate, if the units left over are what's required in your answer, then your setup is probably correct.

Clomid and Ovulation?

My husband and I are trying to have our first little one :) I have PCOS though and so we are seeing a fertility specialist. He prescribed Clomid and I am supposed to start it in two days. I was just wondering do I need to get an ovulation predictor or anything like that or should I just have sex every other day like he told us to?

I am supposed to take the Clomid on days 3-7 and then Premarin on days 8-14 and then on days 12-25 he told us to have sex every other day... I was just wondering if we needed to get an ovulation predictor or if we should just go with it and have sex the every other day?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... Or any tips on how to conceive... Thanks Everyone :)

Honestly, in my opinion, the OPK's are a waste of money. I would do exactly what the doctor said and you are pretty much guaranteed to hit a day of ovulation as long as you do it every other day during that time period. Good luck to you and lots of baby dust!!!

I am still having "hot flashes" at 66 yrs. old< My Dr. says I should have been finished at 52.?

I had a total Hysterectomy at 34 and started having hot flashes around my mid 50's. I have been on hormones (premarin) to control them, but my Dr. took me off the hormones and is hesitant to put me back on them. I am in agony without them, I have a total of about 8-10 flashes in a day & they are terrible at night. Is there anyone older than me still getting the flashes and what do you do? Please advise with serious answers only.
Thank you.

I am slightly younger than you but have had a lot of success with Black Cohosh (a natural herb found in Health Food Stores). Several ladies I work with tried it after me and they also had good success with it. It is an OTC and does not appear to have any side effects.
I started out taking 2 a day and increased to 6 a day before mine stopped. I do not take hormones and if I stop taking Black Cohosh, my hot flashes return.

Mixing Adderall and Xanax?

I take 2 mgs of xanax everynight to sleep.Myself and my dr thinks Im A.D.D and Im debating on starting Adderall.Ive read a little online and some say not to mix it. I ONLY take xanax at night and I know adderall stays in you for about 8-9 hrs (my son is A.D.D and takes 10mgs) so I know his wears off in about that time. Do you think its safe to take Adderall with Xanax even though I BELIEVE the adderall will be worn off by the time I took the xanax?
Im also hypothyroid,and have fibromaliga and have had a hysterectomy. I take .112 mcg Synthroid,2 mgs Xanax at night,30 mg Premarin,and Darvocet as needed for the fibro and I average 4 pills a day.Some days I dont take any darvocet. (havent needed any in 2 days now,so I dont take it every single day). Can someone help? The way I take my meds...Id take the adderall before work at about 7-8 am and assumming its out of my system in 8-9 hrs,I take my xanax at about 6-7pm.What are your thoughts on this? Do you think its safe mixing them?

These two drugs are soul mates.
They go wonderfully mixed together. Well for me at least.
I take Adderall 20mgs every morning for my ADHD and take a Xanax bar for dinner nearly everyday.
the Xanax takes away the wired feeling you sometimes get with Adderall and enables you to sleep. The Adderall keeps me up all night if I don't have a bar and a joint ready for me at home. :)
I've taken them both many times at the same time in higher doses as well with no negative effects.
In my opinion it's perfectly safe, although your going to get a lot of people on here talking ****.
Try it out tomorrow morning. make sure you have someone watch you or that knows you mixed them in case you have any negative effects.
(which I don't think you will, its a great feeling).
stay safe, hope this helps :)

Need help!?

I had my second born 8 months ago via c-section and also my tubes tied. The incision for the c-section was vertical bcz I had a baby less than a year ago and they didnt want a chance of infection (I waited late to have babies due to ovarian dysfunction/fert problems). Anyhow since I devliered last April, I have been bleeding continuously. I was put on orthotricylclin for the bleeding that didn't work, so then they put me on premarin and provera. That didn't stop it, so they gave me a pill that treats endometriosis patients called norithindene. This is now no longer working for me. There have been tests, bloodwork, external and internal ultrasounds. I have a extremely reverted uterus but still the dr is not giving me a diagnosis and last time he consulted with about a hysterectomy. We agreed that if the norithindene didn't work I should have my uterus out. I am very worried about this but cannot have surgery now as my husband is deployed. ANY ADVICE for treatments? Thanks so much!

I think that if you aren't planning on having any more kids that this is probably the best thing for you to do. Obviously you have to wait for your husband to get back, but this sounds like the best thing is to get your uterus removed.
