What could happen if you take Premarin for longer than 5 years?
My girlfriend went to the ob/gyn today and the Dr was very upset that she's been on Premarin for over 8 years now (prescribed by her primary care doctor for hot flashes.) She's scheduled her for a sonogram to check her uterus to make sure it's ok.
What can happen if you're on this medication for longer than 5 years?
nothing much other than increased risk to develop cancer of the breasts, and the hot flushes will come back when she stops premarin as it has only postponed the symptoms of menopause.
I starting to take Premarin its been 2 days now and havent noticed and difference?
I was wondering when did you notice any change and what if any side effrct i might expect?
It will take a little time for the hormone to built up in your bloodstream...I would caution about using Premarin...
I hope you've checked-out all the pros & cons...
& I hope the pros outweigh the cons...
Does premarin cause weight gain? And with menopausal will you gain wieght?
I am just wondering if one of the sides effects of Premarin is weight gain? If I stop taking them will that cause me gain weight since i am still in meopause?
menopause causes changes in metabolism which can change your weight, plus the premarin can cause weight gain. I looked on webmd.com and found the side effects for it. the site is referenced below with a full list of side effects.
I'm currently taking premarin and prometrium is this normal?
I was looking for anyone else out there that has had something liks this happen. My doctor has put me on premarin and started my period a week later. After taking the premarin for almost a month days I began taking the prometrium and like clockwork after a week my period started. I went to the doctor mainly because my period was all out of wack and now I'm bleeding so much with clots I don't know what to do with myself. I was just wondering if I am the only one that is having these effects or is there anyone else out there? Also I told the doctor at the beginning that me and my husband wanted to have children and didn't know how these meds are helping. Thanks you guys for reading!
Directly before ovulation, the follicle begins producing estrogen (the Premarin) and progesterone (the Prometrium). Estrogen helps the uterine lining thicken and expand, and increases blood flow to the womb to support implantation. Progesterone causes the uterine lining to form secretions that support and sustain a fertilized ova, or embryo.
Premarin is a replacement of estrogen in women with ovarian failure or other conditions that cause a lack of natural estrogen in the body. Premarin increase your risk of developing endometrial hyperplasia, a condition that may lead to cancer of the uterus. Taking progestins while using Premarin may lower this risk. This is why your doctor prescribed Prometrium.
Endometrial hyperplasia: A condition characterized by overgrowth of the lining of the uterus. Secondary amenorrhea: The abnormal cessation of menstruation. women who are taking estrogen (hormone replacement therapy); it prevents a buildup of the lining of the uterus and abnormal bleeding. Prometrium increases the risk of blood clots, which can lead to phlebitis, breathing problems, vision problems, or stroke. If you experience any symptoms that might suggest the onset of a clot-related disorder--pain with swelling, warmth, and redness in a leg vein, coughing or shortness of breath, loss of vision or double vision, migraine, or weakness or numbness in an arm or leg--stop taking Prometrium and see your doctor immediately.
Estrogen and progesterone are made in the ovaries and receive chemical (hormone) messages from the brain. Estrogen and progesterone may be missing for one of three reasons:
1) You may have been born without ovaries, have poorly formed ovaries (as in Turner's syndrome) or your ovaries may not work (radiation or chemical damage as a result of cancer treatment).
2) Your pituitary gland in your brain may not send a chemical (hormone) message to your ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. The pituitary hormones are called LH and FSH. LH and FSH help the ovaries to produce hormones and eggs. Without these hormones, even healthy ovaries cannot make estrogen and progesterone. This can happen if the pituitary gland is missing or if it is damaged because of a tumor, infection, surgery or radiation/chemotherapy.
3) Your hypothalamus in your brain may not be able to send its message (a hormone called GnRH) to the pituitary gland. No GnRH means that no LH and FSH are produced. No messages are sent to the ovaries. As a result, neither hormones nor eggs are produced.
Regardless of the problem, the end result is the same: no estrogen or progesterone.
A woman without healthy ovaries is unlikely to conceive a baby naturally. A woman who has healthy ovaries but no chemical message from the brain will likely need help becoming pregnant. She can be given GnRH or LH/FSH by injection to help her become pregnant.
If you are not comfortable with these meds or do not feel like they are helping. Call your doctor and tell them you just need to discuss your meds with him. Let him explain why he is putting you on these meds and why they will help. I hope this helps some. Good luck!!!
Has anyone ever herd of premarin mares?
Has anyone ever herd of Premarin mares? I know it was a massive industry and what happens to some of the foals and everything. But I read a fictional horse book that was based on true things in it. It's called The Outside Of A Horse
in the book someone saves a Premarin mare. I was wondering if you can still do that now?? because i would love to save one of those animals lives.
The PMU industry was pretty much disassembled in 2004 in all of Canada, with the exception of only three or four farms left in Manitoba. The industry is MUCH smaller then what it used to be. Back in 2004, the influx of horses from Canada needing to be "rescued" or rehomed was so great, that rescues from the United States would take up massive trailers to ship them into the US to help ... spread the load? (lack of better term here).
I have a PMU mare. She wasn't used as a producing mare because she was a yearling when the PMU farms were shut down, and as a "byproduct" or cull of the industry (AKA foal), she was run through auction where the rescue I bought her from outbid the meat buyer. A lot of the mares and/or stallions were draft or draft crosses because the bigger they are, the more they pee. Some PMU farms went so far to breed purebred registered horses so they could turn a profit off geldings and mares that weren't used for breeding or producing.
I believe there are less then 10 farms currently that are still in use. Basically Premarin is used as hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women although they found plant and synthetic alternatives to use, some women react negatively to those which is why there are still a hand full of working PMU farms. Whether or not you could "rescue" one of these horses, it's hard to say. My guess is the remaining farms are highly regulated and monitored to ensure the condition of the animals.
If you do end up with a PMU rescue, you need to consider their past. you won't know their handling, you won't know their training (if any at all), their breed is often a mystery since mares were turned out with stallions in a pasture for impregnation, there could be diseases associated with certain breeds (such as possibly HYPP). All in all, it's a crapshoot, if you find a great animal, a lot of it has to do with the luck of the draw and the amount of resources that you have and are available to you.
Will premarin start my period?
I have turner syndrome, so I just started taking premarin tablets and they're supposed to give me boobs and start my period. I am on the 1.25 doseage which is the highest you can have. I'm 14. My question is, since I don't have progesterone, will the premarin still start my period, and if it will, how long does it usually take for the premarin to work?
it might give you a "period" my daughter (she has TS) started estrogen aged 11 she has patch for (evorel) when she was 12 1/2 she got her 1st bleed (so 18 months later) It was unexpected as she was only using 1/4 of a low dose patch, normally a higher dose is needed too give the bleeds. Her bleeds were very irregular (anywhere between 2 and 6 weeks between) so after 6 months she was given the progesterone tablets, she takes the days 17-28 of her cycle so now has regular bleeds (26-30 days between). it all depends how quickly you respond to the estrogen how long before you get a bleed, many girls don't until progesterone is added but we were told it's the estrogen dosage that's more the factor than the progesterone. Once you are getting quite a bit of development the progesterone will be added. (it's important you do get both eventually)
Is it possible to have a positive result for cocaine on a drug screen if you take Premarin 1.25 every day?
Someone told me that the mares used for the collection of their urine were injected with cocaine, and that this could cause false positives for cocaine on a drug screen of the urine of women who regularly take this medication. I was randomly tested yesterday at work and I want to know if this could affect my results!! And what could I do legally to prove that this is the cause?
If you ever test positive for a drug test given to you by your employer, all you have to do is give them a copy of the prescription for the medication that caused you to test positive.
As long as they match (you can't give them a prescription for Darvocet if you tested positive for maurjana) then there should not be a problem.
Can I buy Premarin Tablets with out Doctor's prescription?
I was taking Premarin tabs. over 20 years after histerectomy and now the were stoped suddenly. After some time I start feeling not well. My balance was very unstable. I come with idea to try one Prem. again and there you are - I feel much better, more energii for life and my vision is much better as well. The dizzness is not so strong any more.
I wish I can get the tablets back.
No unfortunately you can get these only on Prescription it is classified as a POM medicine which means it is Prescription only medication. You would most probably get it somewhere on a black market or something but what you will actually be taking is not predictable...and can actually harm your health even. Premarin is licensed and the product was severely tested to see under which conditions it is stable, suitable...etc...Go get your doc to prescribe it ot you...maybe a private script???
What are the condition when you go off the drug Premarin?
Possible hot flashes if you are taking it for menopause symptoms, vaginal dryness.blog comments powered by Disqus
