Methyclothiazide in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Risk Factor: BM*
Class: Diuretics
Fetal Risk Summary
Methyclothiazide is a member of the thiazide class of diuretics (see Chlorothiazide).
Reproduction studies in rats and rabbits at doses up to 4 mg/kg/day (about 20 times the maximum recommended human dose) did not observe any evidence of impaired fertility or fetal harm (1).
In general, diuretics are not recommended for the treatment of pregnancy-induced hypertension because of the maternal hypovolemia characteristic of this disease.
[*Risk Factor D if used in pregnancy-induced hypertension.]
Breast Feeding Summary
See Chlorothiazide.
